Back in 1964, the great Bob Dylan proclaimed that “you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone, cause the times they are a-changing”! Now over 50 years later, his lyrics never seemed to ring so true. Our digital world is changing so rapidly, predicting our future is pure speculation.
We are still giddy from the implications of our mobile world and the Internet Of Things (IoT), and then suddenly Ethereum pops out of the blockchain.
Hopefully you read my recent article on data identities & the blockchain. Unlike Bitcoin, which is nothing more than a currency, Ethereum is “smart contract” technology on which companies are using to build new programs that have the potential to impact IoT projects and processes.
In the 80’s”, during the early stages of the World Wide Web, the internet seemed like an idea straight out of science fiction books. But today, some of our most valuable companies, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Uber, Airbnb etc, have built their businesses on top of the internet. The next quantum leap will be companies building their businesses on top of Ethereum.
Simply put, Ethereum is blockchain on steroids and its great for innovation. Blockchain is decentralizing online marketplaces. Disruption of major industries such as banking, real estate, healthcare and education, will start occurring. The Exhibition Industry will need to be ready to seize opportunities that this technology creates. We could build programs on Ethereum that may mean better identity security for our events. It could stop fraud issues with registrations and credit cards.
I recently joined UFI’s Digital Innovation Committee, with some of the best minds in digital in our industry, including Matthias Baur, Stephan Forseilles, Gunnar Heinrich, Baris Onay, Bernhard Wagner, Marion Vincent and Regis-Emmanuel Crouzet. Together we will focus on how we can harness these digital changes for the betterment of our Exhibition Industry. The goal and mission of the Digital Innovation Committee is to promote digital ideas and concepts to the industry that will help exhibitors and visitors get more out of the shows they participate in.
The committee is intended as a platform for all UFI members to share, discuss, review and embrace new and thought provoking digital developments and projects. We look forward to your feedback, your speculation and your personal observations of how our events are transitioning in this digital age.
